Environment and development: a change is needed

AXIS IV – “Human Capital”

Province of Bari

Province of Bari Sustainability project

“Environment and Development: A Necessary Re-Exchange” is a project involving the entire PIT4 area (Acquaviva delle Fonti, Altamura, Cassano Murge, Gioia del Colle, Gravina, Grumo Appula, Minervino Murge, Poggiorsini, San Michele di Bari, Santeramo in Colle, Spinazzola, Toritto, Turi). Its objective is to promote, together with institutions, citizens and the productive sector, a shared culture of environmental sustainability, in line with the policies and strategic directions of the European Union.

The project is rooted in the awareness that environmental protection is the result of everyday choices, responsible behaviours and innovative production models. For this reason, it adopts an integrated approach that combines information, training and active engagement with local communities, encouraging dialogue among citizens, businesses and institutions on the main environmental challenges.

Activities carried out

The project is structured into six integrated phases designed to actively engage businesses, citizens and institutions, transforming local needs into concrete solutions and development opportunities.

Phase 1 – Listening to businesses

The first phase is dedicated to a qualitative research activity addressed to companies operating within the PIT4 area, with the aim of identifying critical issues, needs and expectations related to environmental sustainability.

Through direct interviews with the most representative companies across the various productive sectors, valuable insights are collected in order to better understand the main challenges faced by local businesses and to guide the subsequent project actions.

Phase 2 – Citizen engagement

At the same time, the project gives a voice to families living in the PIT4 area through a communication campaign and a quantitative research activity.

The aim is to assess behaviours, needs and expectations regarding separate waste collection and waste disposal, while also fostering greater environmental awareness.

Phase 3 – Study of sustainable solutions

Based on the findings emerging from the listening phases, a dedicated study is launched to identify eco-compatible solutions. Particular attention is given to the reuse of waste materials, the optimisation of production processes, and the reduction of environmental impact in terms of energy and water consumption.

Phase 4 – Communication and promotion of training

The interim results of the project are disseminated through a communication strategy addressed both to young people and to the productive and institutional fabric of the territory.

The objective is to promote the training opportunities offered by the project and to spread the values of local development, social growth and environmental responsibility.

Phase 5 – Specialist training and internships

At the core of the project is a 600-hour training programme, including 200 hours of company-based internships, aimed at developing entrepreneurial skills and assessing the feasibility of new business initiatives in the environmental sector.

Participants work on the development of feasibility studies and business projects, supported by expert consultants, alternating between theoretical training sessions, practical activities and company testimonials.

The business ideas developed within the project focused on innovative and sustainable solutions in the following areas:

  • Recovery and processing of pruning residues, aimed at the reuse of biomass;
  • Disposal and reuse of used vegetable oils, within a circular economy perspective;
  • Treatment of olive mill wastewater, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of agro-industrial processes;
  • Photovoltaic-powered irrigation systems, oriented toward energy savings and the use of renewable energy sources;
  • Production of whey proteins, enhancing by-products and improving production efficiency.

Phase 6 – Final dissemination of results

The final phase is dedicated to the dissemination of the results achieved and to showcasing the business projects developed throughout the initiative, also with a view to promoting the replicability of the model and attracting potential investors and funding opportunities.

This phase includes public meetings, as well as communication activities carried out through web channels and local and specialised media outlets.
